Selene

Selene

Selene is the sister to Helios, the sun god, and like him she travels the sky in a horse-drawn chariot, though hers is silver and the journey is made at night, while his golden chariot traverses the daytime heavens. Selene is young and beautiful with a white face; she wears robes and has an expanded silver almost-half-moon crescent on her brow. Sometimes she holds a torch in her hand. Other times she rides a bull, linking her with the moon bull of earlier cultures. Selene had many lovers, but her true love was Endymion, a shepherd whom she discovered sleeping in a cave and whom she seduced. Together Selene and Endymion had many daughters. Eventually Selene, knowing that Endymion was mortal and that she would one day lose him to death, begged Zeus to allow Endymion to choose whether to become immortal and stay with her or to remain mortal. Endymion chose immortality but had to remain asleep in his cave, where he was visited nightly by Selene.

Selene is the full moon goddess most involved with romantic love. Burn white and deep pink candles for her and appeal to her to bring romance into your life, or to nurture an existing relationship. Be very careful with wording here. It is not ethical or appropriate to use magickal means to try to make another person romatically interested in you if he isn't already. Be very wary as well if you are at all tempted to ask Selene to bestow immortality on your current relationship. You and your lover may be destined to be together through all eternity; on the other hand, you may grow apart and regret any bond that keeps you tied once the joy has gone out of the relationship.

Invocation to Selene

Gentle Lady with your glowing face,
moon upon your brow,
radiance all around you.
Shine down on me,
bring your beauty to my life,
bless me with love.
May my heart be glad.
