Maat

Maat

This Egyptian goddess was sometimes said to be the daughter of the sun god Ra. Her name means "truth", and she represents those qualities of harmony, balance, and justice that maintain the order of the universe and keep it functioning in a predicatable fashion. Maat was thought to have been there at the very beginning of creation, rising out of the formless void, and was the basis upon which all the other Egyptian dieties were built. She is the regulating force behind universal law, and holds a sceptre, symbol of power wielded justly, and an ankh, which is the emblem of eternal life. Maat was sometimes seen as bestowing the breath of life upon the pharaoh via her ankh, and this is a compelling allusion, as breath and the power of creation are indivisibly linked in many religions. Maat was sometimes considered to be the Queen of Heaven, across which she guided the course of the sun, and the Queen of the Underworld, where she was part of the trial each soul was expected to go through after the physical death. She is often depicted with outstretched wings, like Isis, but she is more commonly seen holding a pair of scales and with an ostrich feather in her headdress, and this was the feather against which the hearts of the dead were weighed in her scales, to judge whether they were pure enough to pass into the afterlife. Because of this her energy is appropriate for the last quarter lunar phase, when the end of the cycle and the descent into darkness is approaching, and letting go of the old can be appropriate.

Invoke Maat when you need to determine which parts of your life are working out and should go with you into the fresh lunar cycle after the next new moon. Anything that doesn't match up should be gently and lovingly discarded. The same goes for relationships, when the factors that are causing disruption or pain need to be healed and ingrated or let go of forever. Ask Maat to help you examine any issue that is causing you problems, so that you can decide the best course of action to resolve, release, or otherwise improve the problems.
